Argan oil has been used for centuries to treat rare skin conditions and is fantastic for keeping your beard soft and healthy, so it’s no surprise that more and more beard companies are choosing to add argan oil to their beard care products. With hundreds of beard oils on the market all claiming to soften beard hair and promote healthy growth, it can be tough to know which ones to choose, but if a softer beard is your goal then you should be choosing an argan beard oil that that contains pure Moroccan argan oil.
Argan is a plant based oil which is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, which is endemic to Morocco. The argan kernels are found deep within the fruit of the argan tree. Argan tree fruit are small and round in shape with a fleshy pulp covered with a thick peel. Buried inside the pulp is a small hard shelled nut. It is within these nuts that the argan oil kernels can be found. Each nut houses one to three argan kernels.
Argan fruits are left to dry in the open air to make the removal of the fleshy pulp a simpler task. Most of the pulp removal work is done by hand, although some producers have developed machinery to assist with the process. Finally the nut is cracked to expose the argan oil kernels. This last stage is extremely antiquated and despite several attempts there have been no automated machines produced that complete the job. Workers spend many time consuming hours manually cracking the argan nuts.
Once the kernels have been extracted they are normally roasted and cooled before the workers grind them down to produce a brown colored paste that exudes pure argan oil. This process is used to produce argan oil for culinary use. The cosmetic argan used in beard oil is produced in a similar way, although the roasting stage is eliminated to avoid an undesired nutty scent.
